When quantitative information is to be extracted from an image, the process is known as Image Analysis. Sometimes it is easier to extract the information after some other modifications have been made to the original image (for example, filtering out of noise). This latter procedure is an example of image processing. Most software packages incorporate both processing and analysis routines, and are given the generic description of "Image Analysis" Packages.
If the image is to be prepared for display purposes, perhaps using annotation or color overlays, we use the term "Image Presentation" to describe the software.
