There are
three levels of use:
·
Assisted use
·
Daytime self use
·
Night/weekend use
Assisted use takes place by appointment with a staff member. No special training or other formalities are required.
Daytime self
use requires that the user be given basic training in the use of the desired
instrumentation by the appropriate staff member. The
staff member will inform the user when the training level adequate for unsupervised use
has been achieved. The user must also
complete the basic CMSE safety requirements (read and understand the CMSE Chemical Hygiene
and Safety plan, and complete the on-line hypercourses on chemical safety and hazardous
waste). For more information on these
requirements, please consult Mr. Ed Kruzel (13-2070, elk@mit.edu). It also is required that the user be given a basic
safety orientation to the EM lab this orientation will be given by the lab. staff
member as part of the instrument training. Daytime
self-users may book and use instruments independently during normal working hours (7:30
a.m. 4:45 p.m.) on Institute workdays. Note
that if the Institute is unexpectedly closed for any reason (e.g. a snow day) all
scheduled daytime self-use is automatically canceled except for authorized night/weekend
users.
Night/weekend
use privileges are granted to experienced MIT users with a significant track
record of competent and productive use of the instruments. The responsible staff member will advise a user,
on request, whether the users experience on the instrument qualifies them for
night/weekend privileges. In addition, the
user must receive a full safety orientation to the EM Lab from Dr. Garratt-Reed. He will usually be available to give safety
orientations (which take about 30 minutes) without appointment at 11.30 a.m. on Mondays,
1.00pm on Wednesdays, and 1.30 p.m. on Fridays. In
exceptional circumstances, he will make an appointment to give an orientation at other
times. Please note that night/weekend
privileges are not available to people without an MIT affiliation or to undergraduates. The application form, which must be signed by the
applicants project advisor, is available on-line at http://web.mit.edu/cmse/intranet/SEF_Access_Form.pdf
The
electronic lock system is operated by the MIT ID card.
The system will usually be set up to recognize a users card by Ed Kruzel, at
the request of the lab. staff member who certified the user for night/weekend access. In emergencies, other arrangements are possible
consult Dr. Garratt-Reed in such cases. Note
that the older MIT ID cards, with the librarian and blacksmith logo, will not work for
this purpose, and will need to be exchanged for the new cards with the MIT letter logo. This exchange will be made free of charge only if
we notify the card office of a users need to access the CMSE facilities.
All self-use
privileges are granted for particular instruments only.
In no case may a user operate any piece of equipment for which he/she has not
received specific self-user approval from the appropriate staff member.
